[0:00] A lot of here is a special place because it serves a large, underserved community that really
[0:08] depends upon us as the major academic medical center in this borough of the Bronx.
[0:13] And we serve an extraordinarily large catchment beyond the Bronx that depends upon us
[0:19] for superior care in the context of a university medical center.
[0:24] This is a wonderful place to work and it's a place where the work is consistent with
[0:29] the social mission that is very valuable.

[0:00] This is a great place to train.
[0:02] It's a young faculty with tremendous diverse talents and interests
[0:07] and very engaged, not only in patient care, but in the mission of training
[0:12] future doctors who will take over the mission of caring for this community
[0:17] and many others in the United States, and it's an exciting time in this program
[0:21] to be a part of the growth of our department.

[0:00] To be a good resident here, you have to be willing to work hard
[0:03] and also willing to learn in any and every situation.
[0:07] And I think there's so much to learn here, whether it's in the clinic, on the inpatient floors,
[0:12] residents get to do a lot. So all that hands-on experience is going to serve you well,
[0:17] so that no matter where you go, there's nothing that's going to phase you
[0:22] because you've already been there, done that, seen it in our program.

[0:00] I think a strength of our program is we have a really robust neuroband ecology and
[0:05] reconstructive pelvic surgery program. We have several faculty focused in this and so you
[0:10] can meet your case minimums in your first year. We just have such a high volume of these cases
[0:16] and not a lot of programs have enough URPS faculty.

[0:00] They were very engaged with teaching, super eager to ask me about myself, to learn about me,
[0:06] and even just, you know, connect with me, and that really sent a strong message to me.
[0:11] Then the residents themselves, I mean, everyone here really supports each other.
[0:15] We're very close to it. We love spending time with each other in the hospital and outside.
[0:20] I love being here. This is fun for me, and that really makes it a pleasure to show up every day.

[0:00] I think that people definitely are great here. I can't speak to other places,
[0:04] but I think we have some of the best around.
[0:06] They do a great job really giving you the chance to grow,
[0:09] understanding where you're at, what you need to do to reach the next step.
[0:11] We get amazing experience in the OR, a lot of autonomy.
[0:16] We take really good care of our patients and our providers really care.
[0:21] At the end of the day, this is an extension of our family.
[0:24] We take care of each other, we take care of our patients,
[0:27] and we really feel like every day we come to work and we grow.

[0:00] We have great people, great experiences here, great patients that are incredibly grateful
[0:06] for the care that we provide. If you feel like that's something you're interested in,
[0:09] then this is the program for you.

[0:00] We get a ton of experience, especially in our second and third year doing a lot of general
[0:04] urologic cases. I feel like I'm at a point where I'd be comfortable going out into the
[0:09] real world and offering those services to patients. I'm very much focused on the next step of
[0:14] my care, doing a lot of these advanced procedures, developing these advanced skills.
[0:19] This third and fourth year for me, I think are going to be a great transition point
[0:24] where I can start looking at some of those more difficult, challenging cases.

[0:00] The best part of this program is the people you work with for sure, but also the patients.
[0:07] There's unfortunately a lower level of health literacy and so you have to do a lot of educating,
[0:13] but with that comes a lot of advocating.
[0:15] There's a lot that goes into the interpersonal aspects of medicine that even just as an intern,
[0:20] I feel like I've gotten very good experience.
[0:23] This program does a great job of showing you not just the mechanics of urology,
[0:29] but what kind of a doctor you want to be.

[0:00] I would put our faculty up against any other faculty in New York in the country.
[0:08] I think that we've got excellent fellowship-trained physicians.
[0:14] The bigger part is that they love to teach. And you can learn a lot by watching,
[0:21] but learning from somebody that is invested in teaching you is incredibly nurturing,
[0:27] and you feel like that's how you can build a solid foundation.
[0:30] If you want to learn from faculty that are as invested in your future as you are, you come here.

[0:00] I think what makes this program particularly special is that we are very skilled surgeons
[0:06] as a whole when we leave.
[0:08] And that's not just surgically — a lot of it has to do with how to manage extremely sick
[0:12] patients with very complex social issues.
[0:14] We have such a special diverse population and learning how to interact and truly optimize
[0:20] their care is something that we wholeheartedly come away from this program knowing how to do.

[0:03] They're gonna change who I am as a person and as a surgeon.
[0:07] And it's taught, you know, you're taught resilience,
[0:09] you're taught so many incredible skills about communication, patience.
[0:13] And you don't see that. That's not really carried forward.
[0:16] And you don't really look at a surgeon's growth when you're watching television,
[0:18] but it's incredible to see in myself and to watch my peers.

[0:00] I think one of the most unique things about our medical center is that we are really
[0:06] one of the only centers in the region that's able to offer comprehensive and technologically
[0:11] innovative care, especially including state-of-the-art treatment through clinical trials.
[0:16] Many of our patients do not necessarily have the means or ability to travel far distances
[0:22] and they can have very complex debilitating conditions and so for them to be able to come locally
[0:27] to Montefiore and be treated and put on clinical trials.
[0:32] The fact that they have access to this is really unique and special.

[0:00] So I think that any applicant should seriously consider our program because one of the
[0:05] shining features of our residency I feel is just the sense of family and camaraderie amongst
[0:10] the group, not just of the residents, but the faculty too. I think the faculty, we all really
[0:15] get along well together and when you have a sense of team and camaraderie amongst the faculty,
[0:21] I think that that attitude really trickles down to the residency as well, working hard but also
[0:27] really working well together. So I think that's something that's very special about our program.

[0:00] Montefiore's mission is clear in what you see from the patients, the interactions, and the
[0:04] physicians' goal. We strive to serve the patient population here that is typically underserved.
[0:10] And that is clear in our patient manuals, our education, our community outreach, and our
[0:15] goals of providing equal care and access to everybody throughout the Bronx and the broader
[0:20] communities here. In addition, the people who work here are a community, a community within
[0:26] the urology department, a community within the institution, and essentially a community with the
[0:32] patients in the Bronx.

[0:00] Montefiore is in the Bronx and the Bronx is a very special borough of New York.
[0:06] We have also a very special patient population, that's why we always have to think about
[0:12] new technologies, innovative approaches and always being at the forefront of innovation when
[0:20] treating our patients and managing their conditions whether medically or surgically.

[0:00] This is a department where you're going to learn about a wide array of conditions.
[0:07] You will do general urology.
[0:09] You will be involved in the most complex cases exposed to multiple conditions.
[0:15] And this is how you're going to decide what you want to do later on.

[0:00] Montefiore is special because we have the privilege of serving an underserved population that is
[0:07] really grateful and appreciative for our care, the faculty and staff are super supportive
[0:13] and the environment to not only care for patients but also grow academically as a teacher.
[0:20] The experience I've had so far has been fantastic and I wouldn't change it at all.

[0:00] Yeah, so, you know, our days as a resident are relatively well structured.
[0:05] Kind of broke it up with three separate compartments you can say.
[0:09] Everyone starts with morning rounds, we're all gathered together as a team in the morning.
[0:13] We'll review the patients, we'll go see our inpatients, any of our active consults.
[0:16] And then the senior residents are calling attendings and kind of giving the plans out that
[0:20] most of the junior residents will kind of be facilitating.
[0:23] We then often will head out to our respective locations, whether that's being in clinic
[0:28] for the day, or covering operating rooms, so going to the OR.
[0:31] And that'll typically last kind of the duration of the day.
[0:34] And then, once the residents are concluded with their portion of the day,
[0:38] whether it's clinic, OR, or being on the floor and mixing into the ORs as well.
[0:45] We'll conclude the day with a team PM rounds, where often the chief or senior resident
[0:51] is leading some of the junior residents through the events of the day and consolidating
[0:57] everything that we've learned or seen about our patients during the day
[0:59] to give us a good overall picture.
[1:05] So we're ready for the next day to be prepared for morning rounds.
[1:09] But I think our program does a really good job of not only making the structure,
[1:15] but making it flow very easily and very smoothly where residents coordinate throughout the day.
[1:20] It's really kind of a seamless transition during the day of seeing patients in the morning,
[1:26] going to your cases or clinic and then seeing patients in the evening.
